You finally took the leap to write your book. Now you sent it out to your publisher (if you were even accepted) and are waiting for the masses to buy it - right? Still Waiting? How about now - anything yet?
One of the biggest eye openers for me when I first wrote my first book was how publishers do not market your books. They are just a printing and distributing machine. So I hope you have learned all that you need to know about marketing your book before you wrote your book. What? You didn’t? You have no clue how to?
Don’t be embarrassed. Many of us were there and many are still there trying to figure out how to sell books. So now what? Do you give up? Do you frame your book and tell your grandchildren later - “I wrote a book!” but never tell them you made no difference for people or made money from it?
So you need to make a powerful choice . There are only three choices in life as I explain in my book, Life’s One Law: Taking the Guesswork Out of Life! In this case, your choices are: 1) do nothing; 2) cry; or 3) spend money on marketing. Now before you spend money on marketing, which should be between 10% - 30% of your gross income, you are going to need guidance from someone who knows how to market books.
If you are clueless and don’t have a plan, then you are just going to put money into a hole and the only thing that is going to come back to you is an echo as you are yelling into it, “Why didn’t this work!?!”
There are so many things that you can do to market your book, it can make your head spin. Just pick something that you love to do. Here are some secrets to best selling books. I am a strong believer in finding a consultant/coach with a good track record of helping you to drive traffic to your website to sell your book. Oh did I say website? Yes nowadays you need a website. Yes I know - another thing you need to think about it. Don’t get me started about how to make your name known on the Internet. Ask Real Technology Group.
One question you need to answer honestly is, “Why did you write your book in the first place?” If within your answer you don’t say “as a means to drive people to buy my higher end products,” then I have some other news for you. You are not going to make a living from just selling your book unless you sell your book by the truckload or a few other ways. If you want to make a living on your book, then you use it as your business card to brand yourself as an expert in your field. Then you offer higher end products, such as consultations, seminars, teleseminars, CD’s, etc, to sell to people on a larger scale.
So I hope I didn’t depress you even more but inspire you to get your head out of the sand and do what is necessary to get your name known as an expert, create higher end products and then drive people to your website. If you never have done this before, then you need a coach or coaches to help you to attain your goals. Even Tiger Woods has coaches. Yes that’s pleural. And the quality of your coaches will make all the difference. Do you have “coaches”, i.e. family members, friends, etc. telling you are an idiot to think you could make it as a writer or are your coaches professionals who help you make your dream a reality? All the best to you.
